  10. and use your printer driver software with Microsoft Windows 3.1 and
  11. Windows 95.  As with most software and hardware products, some information
  12. is made available after the development of the manual.  Updated information

  38. 1.0 Overview
  39. ============
  40. This printer driver allows you to print documents from any Windows
  41. application to your Canon Bubble Jet printer.  This dual-mode driver
  42. is designed to function with either Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.  The
  43. correct driver configuration is automatically installed based on the
  44. version of Windows you are using.
  45.  
  46.  
  47. 2.0 Key Features
  48. ================
  49. This driver provides a variety of basic and advanced capabilities to
  50. give you high-speed and high-quality printed output and complete control
  51. over the printing process.  This driver includes several key features
  52. that are designed for ease of use and flexibility:
  53.  
  54. 1. Automatic halftone and color adjustment selection
  55.    This feature allows the driver to select its own halftone and color
  56.    setup for the optimum print quality, based on the type of document
  57.    you are printing.  This eliminates the need to experiment with many
  58.    complex settings to achieve the best print quality.  You can use the
  59.    "Graphics" tab to select this feature.
  60.  
  61. 2. Print Set-up Analyzer
  62.    This feature helps you to eliminate potential problems by checking
  63.    the driver selections and notifying you of any inconsistencies.  You
  64.    then have the option of correcting those problems before you proceed
  65.    with printing.  The Print Set-up Analyzer is enabled by default.  You
  66.    can use the "Setting" tab to disable it.
  67.  
  68. 3. Saved Settings
  69.    This feature allows you to save and retrieve up to four setups.  You
  70.    can enter a name for each setup for easy identification.  You can use
  71.    the "Setting" tab to save and retrieve the setups.
  72.  
  73. 4. Remote Printer Controls
  74.    This feature allows you to perform certain maintenance and diagnostic
  75.    operations on your printer from within the driver.  If your printer model
  76.    supports this feature, you can use the "Control" tab to use it.

  79. 3.0 System Requirements
  80. =======================
  81. The Canon BJ Series Windows Printer Driver does not require any additional
  82. system configuration beyond those required to run Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.
  83. However, you can improve the performance of your Canon printer if you:
  84.  
  85. 1. Increase the amount of RAM memory to more than 8 MB.  Increasing RAM
  86.    memory will result in faster printing and reduce compatibility problems
  87.    with some applications.  As an alternative, you can increase the amount
  88.    of virtual memory to reduce the possibility of "low memory" conditions
  89.    (although this does not improve printing performance).
  90. 2. Allow at least 5 MB of free hard disk space on the drive that contains your
  91.    system's TEMP directory.

  94. 4.0 Specific Information for Windows 95 Users
  95. =============================================
  96. 4.1 Installing the Printer Driver
  97. --------------------------------- 
  98. To use this printer driver with software application packages that operate
  99. with Microsoft Windows 95, use the following installation procedure:
  100.   1. Start Windows 95 on your system.
  101.   2. Click on the "Start" button.
  102.   3. Point to the "Settings" item.
  103.   4. Click on the "Printers" item to display the Printers folder.
  104.   5. Double-click on the "Add Printer" icon to start the "Add Printer Wizard".
  105.   6. Click on the "Next" button.
  106.   7. Click on the "Have Disk" button.
  107.   8. Insert diskette #1 into the floppy disk drive of your computer system.
  108.      If the floppy disk drive is drive A, click on the "OK" button and
  109.      continue with the next step.  Otherwise, type the letter name of your
  110.      floppy disk drive (such as "B:") and then click on the "OK" button.
  111.   9. Follow the instructions of the Add Printer Wizard until the installation
  112.      is finished.  An icon for your printer will then appear in the Printers
  113.      folder.
  114.  
  115. You are now ready to print from any Windows software application packages.
  116. If your printer model can print in color, the driver is automatically set for
  117. printing in color.  Otherwise, the driver is automatically set for grayscale
  118. printing.
  119.  
  120. 4.2 Accessing the Printer Properties Dialog Box
  121. -----------------------------------------------
  122. The Printer Properties dialog box contains several tabs that allow you to
  123. setup, control and maintain your Canon printer.  To access the Printer
  124. Properties dialog box, use the following procedure:
  125.   1. Click on the "Start" button.
  126.   2. Point to the "Settings" item.
  127.   3. Click on the "Printers" item to display the Printers folder.
  128.   4. Click on the icon for your printer to highlight it.
  129.   5. Click with the right mouse button on the icon, and then click with the
  130.      left mouse button on "Properties".
  131.  
  132. This will display the Printer Properties dialog box, which contains the
  133. following tabs:
  134.   General  - Lets you print a test page and define separator pages
  135.   Details  - Lets you define printer port assignments and spooler settings
  136.   Paper    - Lets you select paper size, orientation, media type and paper feed
  137.   Graphics - Lets you select print quality and color/monochrome mode
  138.   Setting  - Lets you enable or disable the Print Set-up Analyzer, Color Advisor
  139.              and Cartridge Detection, and save/restore all driver settings
  140.   Control  - Lets you perform setup & maintenance functions (only for certain
  141.              printer models)
  142.   Visual Guide - Lets you launch the On-Line Guide software (if it is installed)
  143.  
  144. You can also display the Printer Properties dialog box from within a software
  145. application by clicking on the Print item from the File menu, and then clicking
  146. on the Properties button.  In other applications, you can click on the Printer
  147. Setup item from the File menu and then click on the Setup button.  However, the
  148. General and Details tabs are not available in this mode.

  150. 4.3 Accessing Help Information
  151. ------------------------------
  152. From the Printer Properties dialog box, you can click on the "Help" button to
  153. display additional information about every feature and option in the Canon
  154. printer driver.  You can also use the Windows 95 "What's this?" method, by
  155. using the right-mouse button to click on any item for information about that
  156. item and its operation.  Alternatively, you can click on the question-mark
  157. (?) symbol in the upper right corner of each dialog box, and then click on
  158. any item to display help for that item.  In addition, a brief one-line message
  159. appears near the bottom of each tab to display information about each group
  160. of selections as you move your mouse pointer over them.

  163. 5.0 Specific Information for Windows 3.1 Users
  164. ==============================================
  165. 5.1 Installing the Printer Driver
  166. ---------------------------------
  167. To use this printer driver with software application packages that operate
  168. with Microsoft Windows 3.1, use the following installation procedure:
  169.  1. Start Windows 3.1 on your system.
  170.  2. Double-click on the "Control Panel" icon within the "Main" program group.
  171.  3. Double-click on the "Printers" icon within the "Control Panel" dialog box.
  172.     The "Printers" dialog box will be displayed.
  173.  4. Click on the "Add >>" button to expand the "Printers" dialog box and
  174.     display the list of printers.  The "Install Unlisted or Updated Printer"
  175.     item will be highlighted.
  176.  5. Click on the "Install..." button.  The "Install Driver" dialog box will be
  177.     displayed.
  178.  6. Insert diskette #1 into the floppy disk drive of your computer system.
  179.     If the floppy disk drive is your "A:" drive, click on "OK" and continue
  180.     with the next step.  Otherwise, type the letter name of your floppy disk
  181.     drive (such as "B:") and then click on "OK".
  182.  7. The "Add Unlisted or Updated Printer" dialog box is displayed with a list
  183.     of the names of the Canon printer models that are available.  Click on the
  184.     name that corresponds to your printer model, and then click on "OK" to
  185.     begin the installation of the driver files onto your computer's hard disk.
  186.  8. When the installation of the driver files is complete, the name of your
  187.     printer will appear in the list of "Installed Printers".  
  188.  9. If your printer is connected to your computer system's "LPT1" port, you
  189.     should continue with the next step.  Otherwise, click on the "Connect..."
  190.     button to display the "Connect" dialog box.  This dialog box displays a
  191.     list of available output ports for your computer system to which your
  192.     printer can be connected.  Only those ports that begin with "LPT" can be
  193.     used.  Click on the "LPT" port to which your printer is connected, and
  194.     then click on "OK" to return to the "Printers" dialog box.
  195. 10. If your new Canon printer will be the primary printer for your computer
  196.     system, click on the "Set As Default Printer" button to select the Canon
  197.     printer as the default printer for Windows.  Otherwise, you will need to
  198.     select the Canon printer every time you want to print to it.
  199. 11. You must then exit and restart Windows to utilize the Cartridge Detection
  200.     mechanism (since your SYSTEM.INI file was modified).
  201.  
  202. You are now ready to print from any Windows 3.1 software application packages.
  203. If your printer model can print in color, the driver is automatically set for
  204. printing in color.  Otherwise, the driver is automatically set for grayscale
  205. printing.
  206.  
  207. 5.2 Accessing the Printer Setup Dialog Box
  208. ------------------------------------------
  209. The Printer Setup dialog box contains several tabs that allow you to setup,
  210. control and maintain your Canon printer.  To access the Printer Setup dialog
  211. box, use the following procedure:
  212.   1. Double-click on the "Control Panel" icon within the "Main" program group.
  213.   2. Double-click on the "Printers" icon within the "Control Panel" dialog box.
  214.      The "Printers" dialog box will be displayed.
  215.   3. Click on the Canon printer model from the list of "Installed Printers" if
  216.      it is not already highlighted.
  217.   4. Click on the "Setup" button.
  218.  
  219. This will display the Printer Setup dialog box, which contains the following
  220. tabs:
  221.   Paper    - Lets you select paper size, orientation, media type and paper feed
  222.   Graphics - Lets you select print quality and color/monochrome mode
  223.   Setting  - Lets you enable or disable the Print Set-up Analyzer, Color Advisor
  224.              and Cartridge Detection, and save/restore all driver settings

  234. 5.3 Accessing Help Information
  235. ------------------------------
  236. From the Printer Setup dialog box, you can click on the "Help" button to
  237. display additional information about every feature and option in the Canon
  238. printer driver.  In addition, a brief one-line message appears near the bottom
  239. of each tab to display information about each group of selections as you move
  240. your mouse pointer over them.

  243. 6.0 Using the Print Set-up Analyzer
  244. ===================================
  245. This printer driver includes an automatic "Print Set-up Analyzer" to help you
  246. use your printer more efficiently.  The Print Set-up Analyzer identifies any
  247. inconsistencies in your setup selections, and allows you to correct them if 
  248. you wish.  By default, the Print Set-up Analyzer is enabled. You can disable
  249. it in the Setting tab of the Printer Properties dialog box (for Windows 95)
  250. or the Printer Setup dialog box (for Windows 3.1).
  251.

  253. 7.0 Hints for Color Printing
  254. ============================
  255. If your printer is capable of printing in color and uses interchangeable ink
  256. cartridges, be sure that a color ink cartridge is installed in the printer.
  257. You should also select the appropriate Print Model from the Graphics tab in
  258. the Printer Properties dialog box.
  259.  
  260. 1. Select the "Color" icon from the Color Model group on the Graphics tab.
  261. 2. Select the appropriate Print Model:
  262.    - "Automatic" selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print
  263.      quality for all types of images.
  264.    - "Graphics and Text" selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print
  265.      quality for solid text and business graphics, with the emphasis on
  266.      enhancing color saturation.
  267.    - "Photo" selects the halftoning method to produce optimum print quality for
  268.      scanned photographs or bitmapped images.
  269.    - "Custom" offers more advanced control over halftoning patterns, bit depth,
  270.      color adjustment and intensity.  These advanced options are not intended
  271.      for novice users of color printers.
  272.  
  273. Note: For optimum color matching with your screen, select the "Photo" setting
  274. as the Print Model in the Graphics tab, and use a higher quality media, such
  275. as Coated Paper or High Gloss Film.
  276.  
  277. If you need printing speed rather than print quality, go to the Custom
  278. Setting dialog box and click on the Fast Color icon.  Be careful not to change
  279. any other settings in this dialog, since it is intended for experienced users
  280. of color printers only.
  281.

  283. 8.0 Hints for Monochrome Printing
  284. =================================
  285. All Canon Bubble Jet printer models are capable of printing in monochrome mode.
  286. If your printer is also capable of printing in color and uses interchangeable
  287. ink cartridges, you should install a black ink cartridge for better printing
  288. efficiency.  Then use the following procedure on your computer system:
  289.  
  290. 1. If you have a color printer, select the "Monochrome" icon from the Color
  291.    Model group on the Graphics tab (this selection is not available for 
  292.    monochrome-only printer models).
  293. 2. Select the appropriate Print Model:
  294.    - "Automatic" selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print
  295.      quality for all types of images.
  296.    - "Graphics and Text" selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum
  297.      print quality for solid text and business graphics.
  298.    - "Photo" selects the halftoning method to produce optimum print quality
  299.      for scanned photographs or bitmapped images.
  300.    - "Custom" offers more advanced control over halftoning patterns and
  301.      intensity.  These advanced options are not intended for novice users.

  303.  
  304. 9.0 Cautions, Limitations and Restrictions
  305. ==========================================
  306. 1. If your printer is capable of printing in color, do not attempt to print
  307.    in "Color" mode when a black ink cartridge is installed in your printer.
  308.    The results will be unpredictable.
  309.  
  310. 2. A known problem in Corel Mosaic Version 5.0 may cause incomplete printed
  311.    output.  Please contact Corel Corporation for an update.
  312.  
  313. 3. For the BJC-4100 and BJC-210 models, the Cartridge Detection feature may
  314.    not function if you have used the BJ Setup Utility to set the Printer
  315.    Control Mode to the "Automatic" mode.  To use the Cartridge Detection
  316.    feature, you should set the Printer Control Mode to either LQ or BJ mode.
  317.  
  318. 4. For Windows 95, if you are using the "Browse" method of installing this
  319.    driver from the "Add Printer Wizard", you must select the file named
  320.    "CANONBJ.INF" from the driver diskette.  If you select the file named
  321.    "OEMSETUP.INF", the Cartridge Detection feature will not function correctly.
  322.  
  323. 5. If you install this driver in Windows 3.1 and later upgrade your system to
  324.    Windows 95, you should re-install this driver in Windows 95.
  325.  
  326. 6. This driver cannot be used when running Windows 3.1 under OS/2.
  327.  
  328. 7. If you cancel the driver installation process before all of the diskettes
  329.    are copied, the driver will not be installed completely, even though it
  330.    appears in the list of Installed Printers.  You must therefore re-install
  331.    the driver and complete the installation process with all required diskettes.
  332.  
  333. 8. If you receive a message during the installation that this driver is already
  334.    in use, you should close all open applications and try installing the driver
  335.    again.
  336.  
  337. 9. Some thin lines that are not solid black may not print using the driver's
  338.    default settings.  As a work-around, select the "Photo" setting as the Print
  339.    Model in the Graphics tab.  This will use an alternate dot-placement method
  340.    that produces better results.
  341.  
  342. 10. A known bug exists in Photoshop v3.0 for Windows that can cause white dots
  343.    to appear in printed bitmap images.  The problem is caused by Photoshop
  344.    defining an invalid background color.  To correct the problem, you should
  345.    add the following two lines to the WIN.INI file:
  346.  
  347.        [CanonDriver]
  348.        PhotoShopBugFix=1
  349.  
  350.    This will allow the driver to explicitly set the background color to
  351.    "white", which matches the media color and corrects the bug.
  352.  
  353. 11. A blank dialog box may appear when you are using Manual Feed mode.  When
  354.    this dialog box appears, you should insert a piece of paper and click on
  355.    the OK button.
  356.  
  357. 12. Some "Bar Code" TrueType fonts may be printed with some extraneous lines.
  358.  
  359. 13. If you select "Automatic" from Print Model in Graphics tab sheet or "Auto"
  360.    from Halftoning in Custom Setting dialog and start printing, some part of
  361.    the printed image that should be printed with "Diffusion" halftoning may be
  362.    printed with "Fine" halftoning.  To correct this problem, select "Diffusion"
  363.    as the Halftoning in Custom Setting dialog.
